ESPN says NC State owes Dave Doeren $10.3 million. USA TODAY printed $9.75 million.
NC State fired Dave Doeren on Oct. 24, 2026. The bill is public, and the two published numbers do not match.
ESPN's David Hale reported that day that Doeren will be owed $10.3 million, with three years left on his deal (ESPN, Oct. 24, 2026). This site prints $10.3 million because ESPN did not print an unrounded dollar. That figure is the one on the Dave Doeren paid-buyout page.
USA TODAY, citing Rodd Baxley of the Fayetteville Observer, reported a different number the same day: if fired without cause before Jan. 1, Doeren would be owed $9.75 million for the three years remaining on his contract (USA TODAY, Oct. 24, 2026). The two sources differ. This site does not average them or pick a winner.
By the numbers
- $10.3 million: what ESPN says NC State owes Doeren, with three years left (ESPN, David Hale, Oct. 24, 2026)
- $9.75 million: what USA TODAY printed if he was fired without cause before Jan. 1, citing the Fayetteville Observer (USA TODAY, Oct. 24, 2026)
- $135,830,733: NC State athletics revenue in FY2025 (EADA)
- $40,535,367: football spending in FY2025 (EADA)

What the school announced
NC State Athletics posted the change at 4:37 p.m. ET on Oct. 24. Athletic director Boo Corrigan said Doeren was relieved of his duties effective immediately, during his 14th season, after a 31-28 loss at Stanford on Friday, Oct. 23, dropped NC State to 3-4 (1-3 ACC) (NC State Athletics). The school release does not print a buyout. ESPN, USA TODAY, and AP report the move as a firing (AP, Oct. 24, 2026).
Todd Goebbel is interim head coach for the rest of the season. He had been running backs coach and special teams coordinator, on staff since 2019. A national search begins immediately. His pay is not public, and neither is an if-fired dollar for the interim chair. The NC State buyout page is his page now, and it stays blank on purpose.
The older database number is not this bill
Before the firing, the USA TODAY coaches salary database listed a school buyout of $13,129,456 as of Dec. 1, 2025. This site's filing treats that cell as the pre-termination overhang. It is not the amount now owed. Doeren's contract is not an active contract, and it is not repriced every day.
A June 29, 2026 public-records tape put Doeren's 2026 pay at $5,750,000, after a $125,000 annual raise, through the 2029 season (PackInsider). That was his pay for the season he started. It is not Goebbel's pay, and it is not the buyout.
This site does not have an offset clause on file for the Doeren buyout. When a contract says a new job shrinks the old school's bill, that clause is tracked on coach free agency. Doeren is off the hot-seat list. That list is coaches still in the job. Money already owed after a firing is on paid buyouts.
Where the bill sits in the department
The buyout is one check against a department that already publishes a full year of filings. Those filings are FY2025, the year before this firing.
NC State athletics reported $135,830,733 in revenue and $129,009,673 in expenses (EADA). On that federal report, revenue was $6,821,060 above expenses.
That same year, student fees allocated to athletics were $7,591,574, and institutional and government support was $9,471,881 (Knight-Newhouse). Government support is not split out of that second line. The health page adds the two lines to $17,063,455 and labels the sum calculated.
Football brought in $69,756,644 (EADA, men's football team revenues). Football spending was $40,535,367 (EADA, football expenses). Both figures are on the NC State money page.
The debt section on the NC State health page headlines outstanding athletics-related debt of $39,397,618 (Knight-Newhouse, FY2025). That is a stock, not this year's check. The financial health grade uses a different cell, because its outstanding line is not filed: annual facilities debt service, leases and rent of $4,762,500 (College Sports Finance, a reprint of the FY2025 NCAA line). The grade is a C.
NC State does not have a booked revenue-share total on this site. The NIL and player-pay page leaves that cell blank.
More on this site: the dollar on the Dave Doeren paid-buyout page, the rest of paid buyouts, Goebbel's blank chair on the NC State buyout page, coaches still in the job on the hot seat, offset clauses on coach free agency, and the department on the NC State school page.
Takeaway: ESPN (David Hale, Oct. 24, 2026) says NC State owes Dave Doeren $10.3 million, with three years left. USA TODAY, citing the Fayetteville Observer, printed $9.75 million if he was fired without cause before Jan. 1. The two sources differ. Todd Goebbel is interim. The USA TODAY database figure of $13,129,456 as of Dec. 1, 2025 was the old overhang, not this bill. In FY2025 the department reported $135,830,733 in revenue, $40,535,367 in football spending, and a C on the financial health grade.
